A Day in the Whoo

Whoo RU, affectionately known as "The Prof," isn't just the official mascot for Rowan University athletics; he's a vibrant embodiment of Rowan pride. His first name playfully echoes the sound of an owl, often a five-hoot sequence, while his surname, RU, proudly represents Rowan University. More than just a symbol, Whoo RU captures the essence of the owl – a creature associated with keen vision, a distinctive call, and a perceived wisdom. While owls in folklore were sometimes linked to the supernatural, Rowan fans believe Whoo possesses a special power to energize the crowd and inspire the Profs to victory.

You'll often spot him soaring around Rowan athletic events, enthusiastically cheering on the teams, and happily connecting with fans of all ages through photos and autographs.Whoo RU, The Prof Mascot

Beyond the roar of the stadium, the Prof holds a significant place in Rowan's history, evolving over the past 50 years from a misunderstood figure to a dynamic symbol of university spirit. Originally conceived in 1957 to reflect Rowan's roots in education (stemming from the Glassboro Normal School), the owl was chosen for its association with wisdom. While early iterations of the costume faced some humorous challenges, including being mistaken for a chicken, the Prof persevered. Through various redesigns, from a scholarly owl with a graduation cap to the current fierce and athletic figure with swooping wings and prominent talons, the Prof has become deeply ingrained in the Rowan community. He represents not only the university's athletic aspirations but also its enduring legacy as an outstanding educational institution, making him a truly unique and cherished mascot.
